I want to build a map showing the dispersion of Montana State alumni across the globe.

Such a map would not be too complicated, though there are a few pitfalls.
The first is where you would get all of the data. Seems to me that you’d need a way to contact all of the alumni and ask them to visit your map and add themselves. Once you did so, the code in Chapter 3 would be good to help record this data permanently.
Next is the fact that just plotting large amounts of data can cause javascript problems on your visitor’s computers. Chapter 7 ought to help you cluster the data to avoid crashing their browsers.
The code is all on the site so you’re welcome to poke through it to see if it applies to you, and Chapter 3 is online at the Apress site if you want to read it now.
